The Alchemists

The Alchemists

" Imagine a movie that, for the first time ever, pulls the curtain back to reveal a small group of individuals you've probably never heard of, but who undoubtedly changed your mind and your behavior."

The Alchemists is a movie about the people who changed advertising in 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Advertising has no form and never will. Advertising is a function. Which is later defined by it's end result. Clients generally don't accept that. Or can't grasp this concept. Advertising can not be streamlined or homogenized. Especially if it's expected to be relevant.

This concept parallels a principle of product design: Form follows function. The automobile industry is a good example of this and demonstrates my point.

In the late 20s/early 30s Chrysler developed, what was considered, the optimal aerodynamic shape for an automobile-The Teardrop. The teardrop was in-fact, the most streamlined and aerodynamic shape. The result being, one car, one shape, one product. Not a strong selling proposition. Carmakers new consumers crave style and unique attributes that become, in some cases, personifications and extensions of themselves. And asking the consumer to shell out 30,000 for a car that looks identical to every other car, is just silly.

Advertising is the end result of effective design. Design=form : Advertising=function
Advertising has no form.

The Alchemists movie positions itself as a movie about creative rebellion. A movie about a few individuals who experienced the Factory line mentality of their pasts, hurting the future of their industry. I'm looking forward to watching it. I would love to see how deliberate the rebellion was.

Interestingly, alchemy's core philosophy is, Everything will eventually evolve.
It must, in order to survive.

Good Communication

Considering that my chosen career lies within a spectrum that spans
advertising, design and communications in general.
One could suggest that "wishing someone well," only one month
of the year, might be a poor demonstration of my abilities as
a conveyor of messages and ideas-a wasted opportunity.

I'll do better next year.
I hope you will as well.

SLOB EVOLUTION

By now, most everyone in the advertising world has seen the dove campaign. So, with the ethical irreverence that generally produces great advertising, I give you,
Slob Evolution.

Despite that fact that this parodies a really nice campaign, it also works in exactly the same context, communicating very similar messages.

Vodka, Tonic, Splash of OJ

Or, creative juice.

I arrived at Dexter's little late and wasn't quite sure who to look for or introduce myself too. But I was quickly greeted, not by one of the attendees, but by the white pulsing Apple logo prominently displayed on a titanium notebook, right next to a glass of bass–I think. What? I'm like a raccoon, I like shiny things.

Last night I had the opportunity to meet with Ryan Price and several other creative types. And by creative types, I mean people who are seeking to express what might have previously been considered inexpressible–idea people. People from multiple disciplines and backgrounds getting together for a meeting of the minds and a cross pollination of professional experience. Not a social, not a bar crawl. In fact, a few agreed, they weren't quite sure what it was just yet. I have a feeling our attendance will define this once a month meeting.

After a few introductions and some business card-swopping, I ordered a drink and chatted with everyone. It was clear that we had a lot in common, either through our professions or being the tech-savvy generation the baby boomers are scared of.

I was only able to stay for about an hour but, it was worth attending. The idea of Creative Happy Hour is still rough, the way all good ideas are incepted. Some of the details below are from Ryan's blog.

We had our first Florida Creatives Happy Hour last night, and I must say it was a success.

Big thanks to Marc, Alex, Kathryn, Kait, Emily, Becky, Charles and Ryan (me).

Quote of the evening by Becky Lane:
The next event probably won’t be at Dexter’s, although that is a nice place if you don’t want to talk so much.

Here is the list of suggestions so far: Crooked Bayou, Moonlight/Roccos?, Lk. Eola Wine Co., 310, Fiddler’s Green, 3/9, Tom & Jerry’s, Bull & Bush, Cleo’s, Cafe Tu Tu Tango.

Pretty soon there will be a Google Groups or a mailing list of some sort for getting out announcements, so stay tuned.

I enjoyed meeting everyone there and look forward to next month's event. I'm sure Ryan would welcome any thoughts from us locals regarding the evolution of this event.

BLOG LOG

As mentioned in a previous post, I'll be posting some information about all of the blogs I'm currently a member of in my MyBlogLog community.

Because it was the first blog I recall joining, I've decided to start with Design Sojourn. Which recently updated it's design. And it's really nice.
Solid design, 3 column grid, and a great Z read. Nice use of the golden rule. I'm envious.

The article that caught my attention first: How to spot the Apple fake?

As Brian pointed out, "if he had done a little more research, he would have seen it was a design test for a job application, and Desudesu has done some great work on his own steam."

This leads me to a point worth making regarding web 2.0 as it infects the consumer mindset and clients begin to toss the jargon around.

The is a prime example of scanners vs. readers. Blogging is inherently dependent on information and access, the internet itself. The lines get blurred and diluted, the integrity of information overall is lost.

Because of decentralized origination of messages, the inability of one poster to interrupt another, the lack of a mechanism to censor content, and the speedy but non-synchronous mode of the conversation it is possible for "fringe" ideas to be heard and to rise or fall on their merits, alongside conventional ideas. Thus, we have a real possibility, for the first time in many years, to create communities of thought in which our socialized images are constructed in a participatory fashion, and can reflect reality as we actually experience it, rather than as some central authority has decided it is appropriate to appear.

I truly embrace this thinking however, what good is a DIGG if everyone keeps shoveling the same shit.

LINK LOVE

Getting a “tag your it!” from a fellow designer blogger AiAlone.com, I feel compelled to join in! Basically the idea is “Mack over at Viral Garden has started a little pyramid scheme to try and disrupt the technorati rankings. He thinks the Z-list bloggers need more love” and yes we all do!

The instructions are as follows:

What YOU can do is simply create a new post on your blog, but CUT AND PASTE the list I have below, and then ADD any blogs you feel aren’t getting their due either. It can be 1 blog, or a hundred(or none if you simply want to repost the same list), but the idea is, find those great blogs that, for whatever reason, you feel aren’t getting their due, link-wise.

Then after you leave your post, the next blogger will do the same thing, cut and paste YOUR list, and add THEIR blogs to the list, then repost it. Add the same instructions in your post that the next blogger should cut and paste YOUR list, and add any blogs they feel should be on it to THEIR list. The list will get increasingly long, and all the blogs will get a sort of reverse ‘pyramid-affect’ of link-love.

Here is the original list with quite a few designer blogs too!

My Blog Log

Mybloglog

IN SHORT
MyBlogLog is a community-driven site for bloggers to meet other bloggers.

THE WAY IT WORKS
In addition to meeting other bloggers, you can track some basic information about your blog through a separate section. Some readers might have already noticed a click counter popping up over some of the links on this blog. And there is small grid located on this page showing my exisiting readers and other members that have just been browsing.

THE INTERFACE
I've joined exactly 81 communities through an icon driven bookmarking system. I browse my communities ( blogs and the other MyBlog folks who have joined them respectively ) with small screen shots of the blogs. There are a few to many clicks for me to get to what I want, but overall it's a nice site.

You can message other members privatley or publicly. Some bloggers have multiple blogs they publish with related content, while others are simply there for the community interaction. The community includes bloggers from around the world. Your choice of content is presented through an alphabetized listing. You can also search tags–a meta search.

THE BENEFIT
Because blogging ( more so now then ever ), is inherently dependent on others publishing a blog, it's worth signing up. At the least, for meeting other people and surrounding yourself around a great deal of content that might have required more searcing.

THE RESULT
The 81 communities I have joined will be featured one at a time here. Simply because they all having something to contribute to UE. And, I'm looking forward to learning something new. 8)
